Espada Negra – HEMA Study Group’s goal is the practice, study, research, investigation, promotion, and teaching of Historical European Martial Arts, commonly known as HEMA.
Founded in 2015, the group has two main instructors, one of whom has an international résumé, who lead classes focused on weapons ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The most popular are the Longsword, Rapier, Small Sword, Side Sword and Sabre. However, this does not mean our members cannot study other weapons, systems, or treatises alongside classes. In fact, we actively encourage it.
The group is also committed to research, and several of our members have collectively transcribed and translated a number of Portuguese works related to the discipline.
We aim to be a cohesive and inclusive group that does not turn its back on anyone. As such, all are welcome at our sessions — to debate, to practice, and, above all, to share our passion for HEMA.
